I want to introduce you to Wasima and her family. The documentary you’re about to watch is one of the most powerful examples of what it means to be a woman in Afghanistan—I’m sure of it.
Being an orphan is already a struggle passed down through generations, but when you add the “disadvantage” of being a woman, Afghanistan becomes a country where survival itself is a battle for women.
Despite all the challenges imposed by a male-dominated system, women continue to do their best to survive and shine. I’ve witnessed this firsthand in every country I’ve traveled to.
But Afghanistan is one of the places where this struggle is felt most deeply. As a woman, you can’t help but put everything aside and start asking yourself:
Why does it have to be this way?
Why do women have to deal with this nonsense?
Why are they forced to waste their energy and lives battling the arrogance of men?
How many more women will have to sacrifice their dreams, their futures, just to fight for the basic right to exist on their own terms?
